The Great Marsh

Like most of the past Pokémon games, you'll probably recall the Safari Zone in them. Well, Diamond and Pearl also has a Safari Zone located in Pastoria City. Only, it's not called the Safari Zone anymore. It's now known as "The Great Marsh".

When you enter the building, you can go upstairs first. Then, for 100 Poké, look out through the binoculars to "get a brief glimpse around the [Great Marsh] area showing Pokémon in certain areas" (Serebii 2007). The Marsh is split into six sections. In order to see them all, you'll have to use the tram in the middle. The Great Marsh itself is not terribly big, but it does have several muddy spots where you'll get stuck in and have to wiggle your way out.

In order to enter the marsh, go to the counter on the first floor. The rules are as follows:

  • Cannot use your own Pokémon to battle
  • Costs 500 Poké to enter
  • You have 500 steps before your time is up
  • You can retire at any time from the menu
  • You can throw bait (Causes Pokémon to stay), or throw mud balls (Makes Pokémon easier to catch, but angers)
